Remember that competence bears little relationship to confidence.

Here are 5 tips we’ve come up with to help ensure you look the part before you act on it!


  • Watch Your Posture – Remember, the client will always almost have eyes on you. Understand that the way you feel affects your body language. If you are feeling assured and confident you stand taller and straighter. When you’re feeling insecure you slump or slouch. But were you aware that the reverse is also true? Keep in mind your posture has a direct link to your brain and impacts your emotions!


  •  Play to Your Strengths – Think of past salon related success you’ve had. The bigger the better! Then remember the sense of power and accomplishment you felt. Hold onto that feeling of genuine emotion before approaching a client for their consultation.


  •  Loosen Up – You can build confidence by honing your ability to commit to a course of action. Your gut instinct is usually right! However, stay flexible and don’t tighten up if you’re forced to quickly change direction. Hair doesn’t always cooperate!


  • Be an Optimist – Is the glass empty or half full? It’s both. The only difference is where you chose to focus your attention. A positive, upbeat attitude is crucial for success. Spending too much time worrying about possible negative outcomes is a waste of your time and your client’s time. Formulate a game plan and go with it!


  • Embrace Failure – Now let’s say you formulated that plan, put it in motion, and the result wasn’t favorable. This is where you need to focus your energy on your knowledge over nerves! Don’t get down on yourself. Mistakes happen and hair doesn’t always react in a way we expect. This is all a natural part of learning and growing as a stylist. Now focus on what did go right and use those positives, paired with countless hours of formal and practical education to formulate a new and improved action plan!

How to Motivate Clients to Rebook

Deliver Beyond Expectations Clients will only rebook if they receive exceptional service. Salons are a dime a dozen, what makes your salon and services special? Ensuring your client is happy when she leaves your chair is the first and most crucial step.

Offer to Rebook Remember, rebooking benefits you more than it benefits the client in some cases. Simply offering to rebook is something that is often skipped by stylists and their front desk staff. In most cases the client will not ask to rebook, you need to offer. Think about adding an incentive to get clients into the habit of rebooking. Once they start doing it, they’ll keep doing it.

Tell Them Why The dreaded “I’ll just call when I’m ready to book”. We all know this is code for “I’ll call in a panic 3 days before an event and try to squeeze in”. Most humans procrastinate, it’s in our nature. Let’s try to break this habit to reduce stress in both ourselves and our clients. If you’re dealing with a client that isn’t on a set cut or colour schedule and is avoiding rebooking, get them to think about the near future. Ask if they have any special events coming up. Wedding, birthdays and special events are your ticket to rebooking these types of clients. Use the event date as a point of reference and mention that booking ahead for the week of that event will avoid disappointment as your schedule fills up quickly.

Know When to Ask I find there are only two moments during an appointment where it’s appropriate to ask a client if he or she would like to rebook. If the client is in your salon for a cut or style, I would say the perfect time to ask is when they are at the front desk cashing out. This is often the responsibility of the receptionist. If there are booking incentives, make sure your reception staff is aware. If a client is in for a colour service, I find the best time to ask them to rebook would be during the processing time. Use this 30 minutes to make sure your client is comfortable. Offer a beverage or magazine but also make them aware that you value their time and don’t want them to have to stick around after their appointment to rebook.

Follow Up – Often clients are in a rush to leave and mention they don’t have time to rebook and they will call to do so. Don’t be afraid to follow up. Most clients will leave the salon with the intention of calling, but life happens and they never do. Make a quick call or send a quick personalized text, “Hey ______, I noticed you were in a bit of a rush so I’m just touching base to see if you had a second to book your next appointment. I just want to make sure I keep your hair looking its best!”


Use these tips and implement some of your own to get your clients into the habit of rebooking. Once they do, they’ll appreciate how stress free and convenient it is.

First impressions are everything!

We can’t stress this one enough. Put yourself in the shoes of your guest for a second. What does your salon feel like, look like, smell like as soon as you open that front door? Immediately after that, is your guest greeted? Introduced to their stylist? Offered a beverage? These are all crucial things to think about. They say first impressions are made in the first 7 seconds. Why not spend your appointment time focusing on getting to know your new client and showcasing your talents vs. trying to change their mind on the judgement they just made. Happy clients will return, and return clients equal more revenue for your salon.

Staff professionalism!

Body language and tone of voice are two things that are sometimes overlooked. An extrovert aggressively approaching an introvert will almost always make the introvert uncomfortable. Now we’re not saying leave your personality at home, our suggestion is just to tone it down until you get to know the type of person you’re interacting with. Mimicking their demeanor is an almost guaranteed way to make them feel at ease in your space.

Secondly, keep in mind not only how you say things, but what you are actually saying. Avoid using slang terms. Make sure front desk staff is using proper English. This might sound silly but I often hear certain words like, “Tip,” “Thanks,” “Hang on,” “Hey,” “Come on back,” “What would you like,” and the list goes on. Ideally we would instead use, “Gratuity,” “Thank you,” “Would you mind,” “Hello/Good Morning/Good Afternoon/Good Evening” “Please come with me,” “Would you like.”

Details, details, details!

Although it may seem unnecessary or insignificant, the little things matter. Clients usually spend the bulk of their appointment doing one thing; looking around. Be aware they are scrutinizing your stylists, other guests, but especially your space.

Although things like cleanliness are a given, what else can you do? Fresh flowers always seem luxurious. Think about placing a beautiful bouquet at the front desk or a couple blooms at each station. If you offer beverages, consider using glasses and mugs vs. paper and plastic. Not only is it environmentally friendly, but it adds a bit of class to the experience. Sticking with the theme of being environmentally conscious, consider using linens in your restroom instead of paper towels. Trust us, your clients will notice.

Don’t avoid the dreaded staff meeting!

Although you may be thinking to yourself, “My staff is great, we talk all the time!”. This isn’t the type of communication that is undeniably necessary to run a business well. It’s important to hold meetings with each stylist to inform them of what they are doing well and areas they could improve on. Once the stylist-owner relationship is weak due to lack of communication, it is almost impossible to maintain a work space of team players! In order to create a luxurious and professional salon and maximize your revenue, you need to have clear communication with the clients as well as your team. Remember, they are your backbone.

As a result of Government regulators finding formaldehyde in the formulas of several of keragreen‘s competitors, Organic Salon Systems worked with Lord Beauty Design to engage the services of four (4) independent national laboratories to conduct sample formaldehyde tests on Keragreen to determine if formaldehyde was present in the product.  The results of the lab tests, along with the certifications, are found below.

To select the best labs to conduct the tests, several criteria were used.

  1. The labs had to be national labs with capabilities, equipment, and expertise to conduct formaldehyde tests using the most contemporary and generally acceptable techniques.
  2. The labs had to be United States Food and Drug Administration listed for testing foods, drugs, and cosmetics; be the United States Drug Enforcement Administration licensed for drug testing.
  3. The labs had to have the following certifications:
  • Certified Analyses (USP, ACSI) for Pharmaceutical Products
  • Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) for Specific Compliance Statements
  • Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) licensed.
  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA) certification/listed.
  • ISO 9001-2000.

All of the selected labs met most if not all of the above criteria.

Conclusion: Lab results indicated less than one one-hundredth of one percent formaldehyde was present in the Keragreen samples tested.  OSHA sets forth a standard for maximum allowed exposure of workers to airborne formaldehyde over an 8 hour period of 0.75 ppm with a peak exposure of 2 ppm for a 15 minute period. This product shows only trace levels of formaldehyde and is well below the OSHA maximum standard.  KeraGreen Keratin Treatment contains about 1/842th the amount of formaldehyde found in an average banana, therefore, it would take 842 KeraGreen Treatments to equal the amount of formaldehyde in one banana.  KeraGreen has 30 times less formaldehyde than average indoor air which measures at 0.1 ppm – 0.3 ppm.
